Another hot walk endured by the hardy duo of Glenn and Alan
We again tied a record for fewest species for
the week -- 9 for week 30 was previously set in 1995.
Glenn and I are getting to be pretty good at this.
See the birds_epoch plot at
http://birdwalks.caltech.edu/bird_data/two_plots.htm.
Our highlight was sighting of the Red-masked Parakeets.
The stats:
The date: 7/26/05
The week number: 30
The walk number: 792
The weather: 85 F, sunny
The walkers: Alan Cummings, Glenn Hamell
The birds (9):
Rock Pigeon
Mockingbird
House Sparrow
Mourning Dove
House Finch
Acorn Woodpecker
Crow
Red-masked Parakeet
Red-tailed Hawk
Respectfully submitted,
Alan

Glenn and I almost wished we hadn't gone on this walk.
It was hot and humid for one thing. Well, not East
Coast humid, or Florida humid, or Houston humid even,
but it was uncomfortable. And apparently the birds took exception
to the heat too. We tied the record for week 29 for
futility: only 8 species. We tied with last year
-- it was 93 F last year -- only
85 F this year, so it could have been worse.
The all time record for fewest species is 7, reached twice,
once in 2000 and once in 2001. See the birds_epoch plot at
http://birdwalks.caltech.edu/bird_data/two_plots.htm.
The only highlight was a Red-tailed Hawk, seen on a dive --
probably diving towards cool water.

Well we missed the walk last week due to lack of birders.
Kent came back from vacation and we
resumed the march. Not much to brag about. We got
12 species, about typical for week 28. The record
for week 28 is only 15, set in 2002. See the birds_epoch plot at
http://birdwalks.caltech.edu/bird_data/two_plots.htm.
